Aktivrente 2026: earn up to 2,000 euros a month tax-free past retirement age
The Aktivrente came into force on 1 January 2026. It is aimed at people who have reached the statutory retirement age and want to keep working. For employers in the Rhein-Main region it opens up a pool of candidates that has often been overlooked. Every figure below is backed by its official source. Researched: August 2026.
What the Aktivrente actually means
Anyone who has reached the standard retirement age and remains in employment subject to social insurance contributions can earn up to 2,000 euros per month tax-free. It makes no difference whether they already draw a pension or have deferred it.
No application required
The Aktivrente does not have to be applied for. The employer applies the allowance automatically when calculating income tax. For companies that means no extra paperwork, just an adjustment in payroll.
Who is excluded
Self-employed people, freelancers, civil servants and workers in agriculture and forestry are excluded, and so are mini-jobs. One clarification matters here: the German pension insurance stresses that the Aktivrente is not a pension benefit at all, but a tax break.
What it means for employers
In hospitality, reception, events and logistics, experienced people who can step in flexibly are in demand. The Aktivrente makes those assignments noticeably more attractive financially – an argument worth stating openly in your job ad.
